Romania – lowest Internet purchase level in EU

Romania has the lowest level of purchases on the Internet in EU as only 6% of Romanians choose it, according to the board table of consumer markets published on Tuesday at the European summit devoted to consumers in 2012. The Romanians are followed by Bulgarians (7%) and Italians (15%). Great Britain registers 71%, Denmark 70%, the Netherlands 69% and Luxembourg 65%.

The study shows that 43% of Romanians (compared to 58% EU average) trust national authorities for protecting consumer rights, 54% (against 65% EU average) think suppliers respect those rights, while 51% of Romanians (against 62% Europeans) feel protected by adequate national consumer protection measures.

On the other hand, 51% of Romanian consumers (largest proportion in EU) and 47% of Greeks think a significant number of products are not safe, compared to 6% in Finland and 7% in Holland. In retailers’ case, proportions are 42% in Romania and 35% in Greece against 2% in Estonia and Finland and 5% in Ireland.

87% of retailers in Romania consider public authorities attentively monitor and ensure that consumer laws are observed, compared to 85% in Great Britain , 84% in Belgium and Holland, 55% in Greece, 56% in Iceland, 57% in Bulgaria and 59% in Poland.

The table also shows that it is not easy for consumers to buy abroad which means they do not have access to a wide choice of products and potential savings of up to 204 billion euro a year.
