Minister Plumb discusses Romania hosting 11th meeting of the Conference of Ramsar Contacting Parties
Romania's Minister of the Environment and Forestry Rovana Plumb on Thursday met Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Anada Tiega to discuss Romania hosting the 11the meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties.
'It is very important and extremely beneficial that this meeting is held immediately after the RIO+20 Conference, which will establish the future action strategies in relation to sustainable development and the green economy. We have first of all to establish what the priorities are for the next eight years in this area, and as far as the approaches of wetlands of international importance, including the Danube Delta, are concerned, the 11th Conference of the Ramsar Contracting Parties in Bucharest will play a decisive part,' said Plumb.
In her turn, Ramsar Conference Secretary General Tiega underscored the increasingly higher importance of the wetlands at a global level.
The conference will examine the way in which the 160 contracting parties have understood and implemented the principles from the Ramsar Convention in their national priorities. At the same time, the conference will decide on the measures to be taken in order to enhance the international relevance of the convention, so that it may contribute to resolving global environmental issues such as the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; reducing the effects of climate changes and adjusting to them; drinkable water and sewerage systems; food and energy security; public health, as well as economic development and sustainable tourism. The conference will adopt resolutions and new principles that will facilitate the preservation and wise utilisation by the contracting parties and other parties involved of the wetlands, so that the wetlands may provide the water that is so necessary to life, said Tiega.
The 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP11) will be held in Bucharest, Romania, July 6-13, 2012.
The COP is the body in charge with establishing policies under the Ramsar Convention.
