Tourism: Romania among last countries in EU for expenses of elderly tourists
In 2014, EU tourists aged over 65 were responsible for 20% of tourist activity, but there are significant differences between France and Cyprus, where elderly people were responsible for 25% of the number of nights spent in hotels, and Malta (9%), Bulgaria, Latvia and Slovenia (10%), Estonia (11%) and Romania 13%, according to data published by Eurostat.
In most EU countries, tourists over 65 prefer domestic destinations, the highest shares being in Spain (84%), Greece (92%), followed by Czech Republic (91%) and Romania (both with 89%). Most elderly tourist from Luxembourg (99%), Belgium (91%) and Malta (82%) went abroad in 2014.
Of EU member states elderly people from Luxembourg spent most (120.8 euro/day) followed by those from Austria (106.9 euros). At the opposite pole the lowest daily expenses per person were recorded in the case of elderly people from Czech Republic (13.7 euros) and Romania (13.8 euros).
On the overall, elderly tourist from EU spent in 2014 over 1.2 billion nights in accommodation units in the world, each tourist spending an average of 52.5 euros per day, 12.7 euros less than general average.
