Agriculture: Romania, first in EU for area grown with corn and sunflower
About a third of Romania’s active population works in agriculture and ensure 5-6% of GDP, while in developed countries 3-4% of active people who work in agriculture generate 6-7% of GDP, said Tudorel Andrei, the president of the National Statistics Institute (INS) at Pria Agriculture conference.
“ 27-28% of Romania’s active population work in agriculture, either on farms or in households, which means 5-6% of GDP. Figures are a little different from other European countries or from our neighbours. Developed countries have about 6-7% of GDP in agriculture and the active population is 3-4%. The difference between the active population and the share of agriculture in GDP is not more than 3-4%. There is high development potential of agricultural output in the next period of time,” Andrei said.
According to him Romania ranks first in EU for the area planted with corn and sunflower.
“Another thing is the high number of farm exploitation, either farms or individual households. In Romania there are 3.6 million farm exploitation and represent 30% at EU level. It seems to be a high figure but France had the same experience. In the 1950s they had the same number of farm exploitations, about 4 millions but reached 600,000 in time. Romania has a big share of corn production. We rank first with 35% of farming area at European level for other cultures. This shows some potential for this area,”the INS official said.
