Telecom. IT: Romanians, regional leaders for people who own more than one smart phone

Romanians are regional leaders for the number of persons who own more than one smartphone and use it for at least four hours a day, according to a specialised study.

“Of the 23 countries analysed in the study, Romania next to Bulgaria showed the highest development potential for the mobile payment segment. At present, a Romanian out of 25 declared to make payments from mobile phones, but the percentage of people who prefer to use smart phones for payments is significantly higher - 69%”, according to data of a study made for Mastercard by IPSOS Research.

According to the study, at Central and Eastern European level, smart phones are devices with the highest potential of replacing cards as preferred payment method, 8 out 10 consumers indicating this device as their favourite payment instrument after cards.

The study identified Romanians as the most optimistic of Europeans about the positive effect of innovation on society. 82% of them think that innovation is beneficial for society, a percentage higher than in developed countries such as France (64%), Germany (70%) or Great Britain (74%).

“The document shows the fact that Romanians aged between 40 and 50 are more optimistic about the impact of innovation on society than those aged between 20 and 29. The main fields where Romanian respondents showed they would like to see more innovation are the education system (53%), public transport (47%) and health system (44%)”the source mentions.

According to him the study also analysed the favorite authentication method for transactions, discovering similar preferences for the use of the user’s fingerprint, validation by a single access code received by short message and the traditional PIN code.

“Romanians seem to be ready to give up the use of PIN codes to authorize payment by card (only 29% of respondents indicated this method, while 37% are more interested in biometric authentication (30% fingerprint and 7% selfie), while 33% would like to receive a single code by short message for each transaction”, says the source.

The study was made by IPSOS Research for Mastercard in summer 2016 and gathered data from 23 countries, the respondents, aged between 20 and 50, were Internet users and owners of a bank account.
