The majority of the Romanians have a bad opinion about the quality of medical assistance
The majority of the Romanians, more precisely 73% of them, have a bad opinion about the quality of medical assistance offered in the country, while the European average of those discontented by the similar services is only 27%, according to a Eurobarometer published by the European Commission on Thursday.
In the same idea, 78% of the Romanians consider, as far as they know, that the medical assistance offered in the country is of poor quality by comparison to that in other states of the European Union, shows the Eurobarometer ‘ The safety of the patient and the quality of medical care’ made between November – December 2013.
Asked the question ‘ which do you consider are the most important three criteria defining medical assistance of high quality in our country?’ the answers of the Romanians coincided with the ones at European level, the most frequent being medical personnel well qualified (53%), treatments with good results (36%)and the observance of the patient’s dignity (29%). At European level, the interviewees placed third the criterion of modern medical equipment, mentioned by 25% against 23% among the Romanians.
The investigation approached the topic of the first three information sources with regard to the quality of medical assistance. Most Romanians mentioned the GP of Specialist (60%), friends or family (58%) and television (35%) while at the level of the European Union, the interviewees mentioned, as the third source social media and the online forums, before the TV programmes.
As for the possibility that patients suffer following the treatment received in a hospital, 67% of the Romanians said that it is probable, while the European average is 53%.
Clearly different are the answers connected to the variants to receive help, including as regards compensations/damages, in case of sufferance following medical assistance offered to the interviewee or a member of his family. Most Romanians mentioned the hospital management (61%), the Health ministry (44%) and a lawyer (26%) while at the level of the EU the third variant was indicated by almost half of the interviewees, the management of the hospital – 39% and the state health authority – 33%.
The Eurobarometer was made as a result of face to face interviews of 27,919 subjects in the EU among which 1,013 from Romania.
