Telecom. IT: Romania among the countries affected by a new wave of cyber attacks in industry

Romania is among the countries affected by a new wave of cyber attacks against the industrial domain, a press release of Kaspersky Lab says.

„ ‘Using emails of phising and malware programmes based on a commercial espionage kit, the group looks for valuable business information, stocked in the victims’ networks. As a total, over 130 organisations in 30 countries among which Spain, the UK, India, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Saudi Arabia and others have been attacked with success by this group. Romania is among the countries affected, but with a limited number of victims (under 3)who come from the industrial domain’ the document shows.

In June 2016, the researchers from Kaspersky Lab detected a series of phising emails with infected documents.

According to the company, these messages were sent, in most cases, to managers – including top management – from numerous companies.

The emails of the attackers seemed to come from a bank in the United Arab Emirates : the looked like documents with info about payment methods with a SWIFT document attached, but the archive had, in fact a malware programme.Later investigations made by the researchers at Kaspersky Lab showed that this campaign was organised, most probably, by a group of cyber criminals who were detected by the experts of the company in March 2015. The attacks in June seem to be the most recent operation of this group. The malware programme from the attach is based on that of commercial espionage HawkEye which is sold by Darkweb and offers a multitude of instruments for the attackers’ the document shows.

After installation, it collects interesting data from the PCs of the victims, including the keystrokes, the clipboard data, the authentification data for the FTP servers, accountancy data from the browsers, accountancy data from the messages of the clients (Paltalk, Google talk, AIM…), accountancy data from the emails of the clients (Outlook, Windows Live mail..)information about the installed apps (Microsoft Office).
