Agriculture : The deficit of the trade balance with food is near 600 million euro, at five months
The deficit of the trade balance with food deepened at 569.6 million euro in the first five months in 2016 as the exports reduced by 6.6% and the increase of the imports by 13% according to the data offered by the ministry of agriculture and rural development (MADR)
In the first five months of 2016, the deficit of the trade balance with food deepened at 569.6 million euro with 421.5 million euro higher than the negative balance for the same period of 2015. Romania exported food worth 1.913.7 million euro, dropping by 6.6% against the corresponding period of 2015, while imports went up to 2.483.3 million euro, representing a growth of 13%, exclusively determined by the increase of acquisition of food in the intra community area’ the MADR data say.
In the first five months of 2015, Romania had a deficit of the trade balance with food of 148.1 million euro.
According to the MADR statistics, cigarettes, wheat and corn are the produce which brought the highest collections from exports in the first 5 months of this year, 969.6 million euro. Thus, in the period mentioned were exported in the intra and extra community 24.900 tons of cigarettes, worth 354 million euro, two million tons of wheat (345.3 million euro) and 1.063 million tons of corn (270.3 million euro).
In the period mentioned the exports of wheat increased by 772.400 tons (+88.2 million euro) the sunflower seeds (+14.9 million euro) food produce (+12.4 million euro) cigarettes – the main produce exported – (+10.8 million euro), live animals such as cattle and sheep and goats (+9.7 million euro and +9.5 million euro respectively) bakery produce, pastry and biscuits (+8.1 million euro) and pork (+4.7 million euro).
On the other hand, there were drops in exports of sunflower oil (- 29.7 million euro), barley (-27.6 million euro),cakes from vegetal fats extraction (-15.9 million euro)soya beans (-7.4 million euro) poultry (-6.5 million euro) and rape seeds (-2.5 million euro).
As regards imports of food in the first five months of this year, the top was dominated by bakery produce, pastry and biscuits worth 97.1 million euro (48.800 tons) pork – 96 million euro (63,800 tons) and food produce – 88.5 million euro ( 23,300 tons).
Compared to the same period of 2015, the imports advanced in the majority of the groups of food produce and mainly in wheat (+25.5 million euro), bakery, pastry and biscuits (+23.9 million euro) having the biggest share in the structure of imports, food produce (+ 18.9 million euro), chocolate (+ 17.3 million euro) bananas (+ 16.1 million euro) cheeses (+ 15.9 million euro) tomatoes (+ 13.3 million euro) citrus (+12.9 million euro), vegetables (+12.3 million euro), coffee (+11.3 million euro) and poultry (+ 6.2 million euro).
As for quantity, the biggest increase of imports was in: wheat (+128.1%), milk and cream (+50.9%) sugary produce without cocoa (+48.8 %) tomatoes (+47.4%) apples, pears and quince (+33.6%) cheeses (+32.8%) bananas (+31.7%) vegetables (+29.0%) chocolate (+21.8%) and coffee (+20.1%).
In exchange, in the period mentioned the imports of soy grits (-18.4 million euro) and sunflower seeds (-4.8 million euro). At the same time, the volume of corn imports dropped by 620,300 tons (-86.3 million euro). At the same time, the foreign deliveries of corn had a decline of 1.34 million tons (-55.9%) the income obtained being diminished by 214 million euro against the similar period of 2015.
The European Union was the main partner in the exchange of food produce, as the deliveries to the member states had a value share of 60.3% of the total of exports, and the intra community acquisitions had a share of 82.2% of the total of imports.
