Economy Minister to submit draft law to Parliament about mining operations

Minister of Economy Varujan Vosganian will submit to the Parliament a draft law allowing the capitalization of mining extraction with new technology, leading to the reintroduction of mines in the economic circuit.

'We will submit a draft law to the Parliament in two weeks allowing us to extract with the help of the new technologies if the investors' intentions allow for it. This will also be accompanied by a better legislation on higher prices for public administration. These are mines that are closed, or coal or non-ferrous mines which, once technology evolves or some investors show up, they could reopen and re-enter the economic circuit. We have talked to the representatives of the relevant authority and in a few weeks we will prepare a normative document through an interministerial committee, allowing the reintroduction of mines in the economic circuit and speeding up licences. There are hundreds of licences in various procedural stages. There is a growing interest for the past few years to reopen mines,' said Vosganian.

'The Romanian mining legislation, which was written almost ten years ago, does not provide this opportunity. There is no legal possibility for a mine which enters a shutdown procedure to be reversed. However, this is what we want to do,' said the minister of Economy.

Romanian Business Leaders foundation organized the second edition of the Romanian Business Leaders Summit event in Bucharest in February 7 and 8.

More than 200 business leaders, government representatives and diplomats, and members of the civil society in the fields of education, good governance and entrepreneurship attended the event over the two days.
