Transactions in used cars in Romania reach 1.1 mln units in 2017
Last year's transactions in used cars in Romania reached 1.1 million units, while in the case of new cars the number exceeded 100,000 units, according to an analysis by Autovit.ro on the basis of the data provided by the Driving License and Vehicle Registration Directorate (DRPCIV).
At a comparative level, in 2016, the market for used cars reached 641,909 units.
"Last year, the market for new cars exceeded 100,000 units, after almost a decade, this being the highest level in the last eight years and the fourth consecutive year of growth. The market for imported used cars reached the highest level since there have been statistics, up by 74% from 2016, to over half a million units. The highest level of the market was reached in 2008, when 300,000 units were registered. On the other hand, the worst year for the market for used cars was 2011, when the total reached not even 100,000 units," according to the said analysis.
According to the cited source, the "Car Scrappage" programme had a low impact on the auto market in 2017, so less than a quarter of the acquisitions in the market were made through it.
On the other hand, the subsidies granted for purchasing electric cars boosted this niche, and last year 500 people applied to buy such cars, compared to up to 50 cars a year, as registered previously.
In 2017, the domestic transactions in used cars recorded a record of more than 496,000 units, up 99% compared to 2016 and exceeded the maximum seen in 2011 - 411,000 units.
The most sought-after car makes were Audi, BMW and Volkswagen last year, and the most demanded car models were Volkswagen Passat, Audi A4 and Volkswagen Golf.
