Trade: Romanians eat 25% less meat than five years ago

The meat and meat product consumption dropped by 25% in the last five years because of the lower purchase power and was still dropping in the first 6 months of 2014, Ovidiu Dusleag, the vice president of the Romanian Meat Association (ARC) told Mediafax.

“The salami and sausage market dropped by 20-25% in the last 5 years. Initial estimates for 2014 announced zero increase, but the latest indicators show a drop of 1-2%,” Dusleag added. He pointed out that in EU the average meat consumption per capita is about 85 kg per year, while in Romania it is at least 25% lower.

Pork meat remains in the top of Romanian consumers and the preferred meat products are those made from pork meat. Recently there has been an increase of turkey meat and meat product consumption.

“The consumers’ general tendency has been to choose economic products, but they chose mainly well known producers. According to age and education level, there are different purchase criteria,” the official said.
