Trade: In December, the consumption of wine grows by 50% against a normal month; The Romanians prefer red wine
The wine consumption grows with over 50% during the period of winter festivals against a normal month, the Romanians preferring red wines in December although usually they prefer white wine, stated the general manager of the National Employers’ agency of Wine and Winery (PNVV), Ovidiu Gheorghe. ‘ During winter festivals the wine trade increases by over 50%against a normal month and especially the consumption of red wine, the Romanians preferring white wine usually, almost 60% of the total of wines. Although there are no market studies, the total consumption of wine in December is estimated at 50 million litres, but only 40% come from the taxed domain’ Gheorghe said.
PNVV estimates the wine production of this year among the average of the last years, a little over 4 million hectolitres, but from the quality point of view, the 2015 was a non-typical one, with variations of quality and quantity from a region to another.
At European level, Romania is among the countries important from the point of view of wine and wineries, the world leader being Italy with a production of 48.9 million hectolitres in 2015, followed by France with 47,4 million hectolitres.
According to the data published by the International Organisation of Wine and Vineyards (OIV) the wine production of Romania increased by 9% in 2015 up to 4.069 million hectolitres, from 3,750 million hectolitres in 2014, the country being 13th in the top of the biggest world producers of wine.
The annual consumption of wine in Romania is 25 litres per capita and represents only half of the consumption of developed countries which is over 50 litres/capita. For example, in France consumption is 58 litres/capita and in Italy 53 litres/capita.
