Telecom.IT: Study: 12% of Romanians own a smart phone

12% of Romanians aged over 14 own a smart phone and 5% a tablet, according to the study made by Mercury Research at the end of 2013. The use of smart phones and tablets is spread mainly among high school and college students, young people under 35 and people with higher education. A significant percentage of smart phone and tablet users do not use these devices to connect to the Internet.

High school and college students - in step with technology

To have a gadget does not depend necessarily on having your own incomes, as students exceed in number both employees and employers. While among employees about 1 out of 6 has a smart phone, the student percentage is higher, reaching 38%. As for tablets, students also hold pride of place , 14% of them having such a device, compared to 9% of employers and 6% of employees.

Students are also before other segments by owning both gadgets, 8% of them having both a smart phone and tablet, a percentage three times higher than the national average (3%).

Gadget = mobile Internet?

Although the penetration of mobile Internet has grown of late, as well as sales of smart phones and tablets, having such a gadget does not necessarily mean using it to surf the Internet. The res!com study points out that 20% of smart phone owners never connect to mobile Internet, while the percentage of tablet owners who do not connect to the Internet is higher - 43%. Tablets might be used mainly for games.

Students are again in the top, most of them who own such a device using the Internet. Only 12% of students who own a smart phone and 18% of tablet owners do not access the Internet from those gadgets. The study is representative at national level and was made in September 2013 by means of face to face interviews, on a sample of 1200 respondents aged over 14. The margin of error is +/- 2.8% at a confidence level of 95%.

Res!com is the first study in Romania about the market of telecommunication services which has offered since 2006 information about their use and expenses allocated by the people.
