Telecom.IT: Fixed broad band Internet connections grew by 7.9% last year
The number of fixed broadband Internet connections grew last year by 7.9% to 3.5 million, the penetration rate per 100 inhabitants reaching 18.6%, 1.4% more than the previous year, according to ANCOM.
“Both the number of access connection to broad band Internet in fixed points installed to natural persons grew in 2012 by 8%, reaching 3.2 million connections installed to natural persons and 0.34 million installed to juridical persons. Compared to the end of 2011, the penetration rate of Internet connections per 100 inhabitants is 18.6%, on the rise by 1.4%, while the penetration rate per 100 households grew by 3.3% to 45.2%, an ANCOM press release shows.0.9 million connections out of 3.5 million connections were installed in the rural area at the end of 2912, on the rise by 22.2% compared to 2011.
A number of 2.67 million connections were installed in the urban area, an annual growth of 3.9%.
“As for access infrastructure to the final user, the most important annual growths were registered by connections using UTP/FTP cable (increase by 166 thousand connections), connections using coaxial cable (rising by 41 thousand connections) and connections using metal wires (on the rise by 28 thousand)” a press release shows.
ANCOM data show that of overall broadband Internet connections supplied to fixed points, 3.15 million connections are based on FTTx technology, which uses optic fibre up to the final user, the access being made by means of other supports which make possible to offer high data transfer speeds.
According to data supplied by fixed telephone suppliers, 2012 brought drops in number of access lines (-5.4% against 2011) and for the number of subscribers (-0.6% up to 4.1 million subscribers).
An access line is the installed telephone post while a subscriber is the person with contract concluded with the service supplier for one or several access lines.
As a result of the drop of number of lines, the penetration rate of fixed telephones per 100 inhabitants drops to 23.2%, while the penetration rate of fixed telephony per 100 households drops to 53.6%.
“The traffic made by final users by means of public networks of fixed telephony continued to drop in 1012 by 8.8% reaching 5.4 billion minutes. Voice traffic in fixed networks registered an annual drop of 17% while traffic to other fixed networks recorded growths by 3.6% and 4.2% and by 1.4% a press release shows.
According to ANCOM in 2012 people talked for 1 hour and 40 minutes per months in 2012, less than in 2011 while the average duration climbed by 0,5% to slightly went up to 3 minutes and 13 seconds.
