Telecom.IT : Digital Agenda for Romania 2020 put up for public debate until July 31, 2014

Total investments in Romania's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector will reach about 2.4 billion euros by 2020, with an expected positive impact on the GDP of 13 percent, shows the Digital Agenda for Romania 2014-2020, a document put up for public debate until the end of July, on the website of the Ministry for the Information Society (MSI).

According to the cited source, the key performance objectives of the Digital Agenda require cumulative efforts by the European countries for meeting the objectives assumed by the European Commission.

'Considering the 7 pillars underpinning the Digital Agenda for Europe 2014 - 2020, Romania has adjusted them to the current context, defining four key areas of action to pursue as Romania's vision of this ambitious program that will lead to economic growth and higher competitiveness, while covering the basic principle stated above, with a view to achieving long-term sustainable economic growth,' reads the document.

The envisaged areas are: e-Government, Interoperability, Cyber security, Cloud Computing, Open Data, Big Data and Social Media; ICT in Education, Health, Culture and e-Inclusion; e-Commerce, Research, Development and Innovation in ICT; Broadband and digital infrastructure services.

The last area ensures social inclusion and benefits all the other areas of action. A full implementation of the strategic vision of Romania's ICT sector will result in total investments of about 2.4 billion euros.

The direct and indirect impact on the economy, calculated in accordance with good practices in other European countries that have made similar investments could translate into a 13 percent increase in GDP, a rise by 11 percent in the number of jobs and a 12 percent reduction of administrative expenses over the period 2014-2020.

The paper on the Digital Agenda for Romania 2014-2020 can be found on the MSI website at the section 'Decision Transparency - 2014 Projects'; interested persons may submit observations and recommendations until July 31, 2014.
