Romania's exports of wheat, maize double in first 8 months to 3.1 mln tonnes
Romania exported in the first eight months of this year 3.13 million tonnes of wheat and maize, more than twice compared with the same period of 2011, when exports totaled 1.5 million tonnes, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).
From the amount of grain exported (the EU market and third countries) in the first eight months of this year, wheat represented 1.303 million tonnes, compared with 732,171 tonnes in 2011, and maize totaled 1.831 million tonnes, compared with 768,023 tonnes in the same period of 2011.
According to the MADR, the receipts from the export of wheat and maize were worth 748.26 million euros in the January-August 2012 period, almost 63 percent of the total sum, with 469.83 million euros having been received from the sale of maize alone.
Compared with the same period in 2011, the receipts increased almost twice (377.43 million euros in 2011) due to favorable export prices on the international market.
On the other hand, 348,700 tonnes of wheat, worth 72.86 million euros and 617,717 tonnes of maize, worth 162.302 million euros, were imported in the first eight months of the year.
