Italian wine experts pick Romania to produce world's best wine selection

Italian wine experts plan producing in Romania, specifically at a site near the Pestera settlement (202 km east of Bucharest) in Constanta County, the world's best wine selection with a total investment of eight million euros.

'The first wine sort made in the Romanian vineyard estate of Bogdan, near Pestera, will hit the market in 2013, and another six varieties of wine will be produced as of 2014. It is our ambition to produce here the best wine in the world, because not only did we find here great soil, lots of enthusiasm, but we also found partners interested in both the financial side - which is one hundred percent Romanian - and in the quality aspect,' Italian wine expert Luca Maroni declared on Thursday at a wine-tasting event organized by the Italian Embassy in Bucharest.

Italian and Romanian wine experts joined forces to set up a 155-hectare vineyard which could produce two million bottles a year. The record the Italians want to overthrow also includes the processing technology, which will be solely biodynamic.

'We will set a world record because at this time there is no other company in the world to process the grapes from 155 hectares of land and turn them into wine by biodynamic technology, which means that no chemical fertilizer is put in the cultivated ground, but the process is such that the vine takes all that it needs from the soil,' said Maroni.

He added that there are three production lines installed on the Bogdan vineyard estate: a universal - economy one, an intermediate one and a top-performing one, while the wine sorts will include the range Pinot Noir, Feteasca Neagra, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Muscat Ottonel.

Boasting a history of over 3,000 years of wine making and over 2,000 varieties of wine, 10,000 producers and 20 vineyard regions, Italy is in a steady competition with France over the title of the world's leading wine producer. In 2011, Italy's wine production reached 40.3 million hectoliters, of which 60 pct were represented by high quality wines.
