Infrastructure: Over 38% of public roads in Romania are stone or dirt roads

About 40% of public roads in Romania are made of stone or dirt and only 35.4% have been modernized, according to data published by INS on Friday, valid for December 31, 2014.

At the end of last year, public roads totalled 85,362 km, of which 17,272 km (20.2%) national roads, 35,505 km (41.6%) county roads and 32,585 km (38,2%) communal roads.

“As for the type of covering, the public road structure includes: 30,240 km (35.4%) modernized roads (90.5% of modernized roads have heavy and middle asphalt coating), 22,088 km (25.9%) roads with light coating and 33,034 km (38.7%) stone or dirt roads. The technical state of public roads included 44.4% of modernized roads and 52% of roads with light coating which have an expired service period,” INS shows.

Of all national roads 6,194 km (35.9%) are European roads, 683 km (6.1% more than in 2013) highways, 276 km (1.6%) roads with 3 traffic lanes, 1,673 km (9.7%) roads with 4 lanes and 22 km (0.1%) roads with 6 lanes.

County roads were roads with light coating (44.2%) and communal roads were stone roads (46.3%).

On the other hand, railways of public use amounted to 10,777km at the end of 2014, of which 10,638 km (98.7%) had normal gauge, 5 km had narrow gauge and 134 km (1.3%) had wide gauge.

At the end of 2014 there were 4,029 km of electrified railway, representing 37.4% of the railway in exploitation.
