In 2015, Romania recorded the largest annual percentage drop in domestic wine consumption
In 2015, Romania recorded the largest annual percentage drop in domestic wine consumption (minus 17.3 percent) of all the leading wine-consuming countries, according to an annual report published by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) that also says self-consumption, which makes up almost 50 percent of the domestic market, is hard to determine in Romania.
According to the OIV report, Romania is ranked 12th among the world's largest wine makers, with an output of 3.5 million hectolitres in 2015, down 6 percent from 3.7 million hectolitres in 2014, as land under vine in Romania levelled out at 192,000 hectares, the same as in 2012, the fifth largest area in Europe after Spain, Italy, France and Portugal.
By means of comparison, Australia and South Africa's land under vine is by 149,000 hectares and 130,000 hectares smaller, respectively. Nevertheless, both had larger wine outputs, at 11.9 million hectolitres and 11.2 million hectolitres, respectively. At the same time, the two countries are ranked fifth and sixth in the ranking of world's wine exporters, with a value of 1.459 billion euros in Australia's case and 629 million euros in South Africa's case, whereas Romania is not even among the world's 11 largest.
Worldwide, OIV is estimating a 10.6-percent increase in trade in wine in 2015 compared with 2014, to 28.3 billion euros. World's wine production advanced 2.2 percent to 274 million hectolitres, whereas land under vine worldwide stood at 7.53 million hectares in 2015, slightly down by 7,000 hectares, mainly in Europe.
