Healthcare : 580 physicians left Romania in first three months of 2013
The president of the Physicians’ College in Romania, Vasile Astarastoae declared in Suceava, on Thursday, that the “wave” of physicians leaving the country this year – 580 doctors, can be compared to those of 2007. He said, at a press conference, that the Romanian health system was facing a personnel deficit, since over 14,000 physicians have chosen to leave Romania since 2007. 580 doctors left in the first three months of the year, while 250 others requested documents to leave in the first weeks of April. The number of doctors leaving the country could be compared to that of 2007 when Romania joined EU.
While in 1989 there were 56,000 practicing physicians in Romania in 2013 they are 39,896.
Astarastoae showed that the average level of a resident physician in Romania is 200 euro/month, while in other EU countries it is 1,300 euro, a significant difference, He mentioned that 41 million euro/year are needed to increase the incomes of resident physicians.
