Eco cars sales double in Romania January-July, up to 2.5 pct of total market

Sales of eco-friendly cars have reached 2.5 per cent of the total market in January through July this year, which is a significant increase against the same period last year, with the total number of units sold 2,293, almost double compared with the reference interval, informs the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA).

According to statistics, out of the total number of units sold in January-July, 1,754 units were plug-in hybrid cars (54.5 per cent increase compared with the first seven months of last year), and 485 were electric cars, 3.2 per cent more (+225.5 per cent) compared with January-July last year.

In the said interval, the new eco-friendly cars accounted for 2.5 per cent of the total sales on the market, while they only accounted for 1.8 per cent of the total market in the same interval in 2017. Overall, 2,293 "green" cars were sold in Romania in the first seven months of the year, up 99.8 per cent compared with the same time span last year, when there were sold 1,284 units.

The number of electric and hybrid cars sold in Romania in July this year dropped by 19.3 per cent from the previous month, when records showed 480 cars sold.

The APIA statistics shows that, last year, the electric and hybrid cars reached 2.2 per cent of the total new car sales in Romania, with 2,811 units sold, 136.7 per cent up versus last year.

The relevant ministry estimates that, in 2018, Romanians will buy, through the "Rabla Plus" programme 2,000 electric cars.

Access to this programme is not conditioned on the radiation of the used car, with the possibility existing of cumulating the premium available under the "Rabla Clasic" programme (of 6,500 lei) with the eco-labels of the "Rabla Plus" programme, provided that the applicant buys either a new electric car or a hybrid plug-in car.
