Dutch company Van Oord to complete offshore breakwater in Constanta port
Van Oord Dutch company and the Romanian Transports Ministry, via the Administration of the Constanta Port, signed on Friday the contract for the completion of the offshore breakwater in the port of Constanta, with the value of the works standing at nearly 150 million euros.
'This action complies with the ministry's strategy we said we would implement, that of launching as many EU-funded projects as possible, this being a priority of my term,' Minister of Transports Relu Fenechiu said.
The works are funded through the Sectoral Operational Programme Transports and will be completed at the end of 2014.
'The completion of the offshore breakwater aims to expand the existing breakwater by 1.05 km, a fact that will improve the exploitation conditions and the safety of the vessels entering the port of Constanta (the biggest Romanian port along the Black Sea). The project is pretty important for the port of Constanta, which will become more attractive from the commercial viewpoint, as well as in security terms, and for the area-based companies that sub-contract the works for the Dutch entrepreneur,' State Secretary with the Ministry of Transports Valentin Preda said.
The offshore breakwater in Constanta was built between 1976-1990, but only 4.8 km have been completed, as works have been suspended in 1990.
The winner of the tender for this project, SC Grup Servicii Petroliere SA, was established more than three years ago, but the signing of the contract was postponed due to complaints tabled by the companies that took part in the tender.
