Agriculture: Romanian agri-foodstuffs trade posts over 104 M euros in 2-month surplus

The Romanian agri-foodstuffs trade balance posted 104.2 million euros in surplus in the two months of 2014 as compared to 169.2 million euros worth of deficit in last Jan. and Feb., show figures communicated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Romania, in the two months, shipped agricultural produce worth a total 814.2 million euros, up by 54.3 percent (286.6 million euros) from the same period in 2013; such shipments included deliveries to the European Union countries and exports to other countries. Imports totalled 710 million euros in the two months, slightly up by 1.9 percent from Jan.-Feb. 2013.

According to the ministry, four products contributed to the significant increase in the export revenues, namely maize, wheat, cigarettes and sunflower seeds, which accounted for 63 percent of overall revenues.

The main ari-foodstuffs imported by Romania in Jan. and Feb. of 2014 included pig meat, sunflower seeds, citrus fruit, animal food, chocolate and raw tobacco.

The EU was the main partner of the Romanian agricultural trade, with the Romanian exports of agri-foodstuffs to the bloc accounting for 57.6 percent in the two months, while imports from the EU members accounted for 82.6 percent.

Romania last year managed for the first time in 20 years to record more than 300 million euros in surplus in the agri-foodstuffs trade, as compared to nearly 800 million euros deficit in 2012.

Romania last year exported agri-foodstuffs amounting to more than 5.098 billion euros, by 1.183 billion euros more than in the prior year (plus 30.2 percent) and ended the year in nearly 325 million euros plus to the relevant trade balance.

The agri-foodstuffs imports were a little over 4.773 billion euros, marking a 2.4 percent rise from 2012.
