Agriculture Minister: We estimate wheat production of 5.6 million tons, 40% lower than last year
Adrian Oros, the minister of agriculture, announced on Tuesday partial results about the harvesting campaign. The average wheat yield dropped by 40% compared to 2019, to 2.9 tons/ha, estimating a wheat production of 5.5-5.6 million tons. The official says drought has strongly affected autumn cultures of reap, rye and barley.
Rye yield was also reduced, being 2.5 tons/ha against 3.2 tons in 2019. For barley the average yield is 2.6 tons/ha against 5 tons/ha last year, a drop of 47%.
“For reap, the average yield was 2.3 tons/ha last year and is 1.9 tons/ha this year. A significant drop was recorded in this case too, as a result of the drought recorded in autumn 2019 and the abundant rainfalls of 2020 while in certain areas like Dobrogea, southern Moldova there are areas effected by drought,” Oros said.
