Traian Basescu to Philippe le Houerou: We have another three regions where gold is available
President Traian Basescu on Monday, at the Cotroceni Palace, received Philippe Le Houerou, vice-president of the World Bank (WB) for Europe and Central Asia, to whom he spoke about the necessity to create jobs and emphasized the fact that Romania was trying to draw capital for the gold mines at Rosia Montana (central Romania), but that there were also another three places that are available from this point of view.
'Unfortunately, the question of job creation comes before we come to competitiveness on the basis of structural reforms. And we must again have two programmes at the same time: on the one hand, we must work in order to increase competitiveness, and on the other hand, as much as we can, using the existing resources, we must increase the number of jobs. Here, for example, we have some discussions referring to shale gas and job creation. Gold mines at Rosia Montana, copper mines at Rosia Poieni [central Romania], which will probably be pushed to a partnership with the private sector. But on the other hand, we have another three regions in which gold is available,' Basescu said at the beginning of the meeting at the Cotroceni Palace.
'Finally we need a balance between the resources exploited by Romanian companies and the resources exploited in partnership with foreign companies and foreign capital. We must keep this balance,' also said Basescu.
The WB vice-president said that, currently, our country must consider the global competition and that, in order to cope with it, the continuation of the structural reforms was necessary.
'Last time we spoke about agriculture. Romania can and should be a ‘green' [ecological] superpower. ... But this implies reforms, this implies investments,' said Le Houerou.
