Romania and India to cooperate in nuclear field

Romania and India will cooperate in the nuclear field, exchanging information related to peaceful use of nuclear energy, the Executive's Press office informs on Wednesday.

In this regard, the Government approved, in its meeting, a decision on the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activities in Romania (CNCAN) and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) for exchange of information and cooperation in the regulatory field of nuclear activities conducted for peaceful purposes, signed in Vienna, Austria, on September 19, 2012.

The decision approved on Wednesday is the first document of cooperation between regulatory authorities of the two countries in nuclear field. The document specifies the legal framework of nuclear and radiological activities for peaceful purposes, including procedures, practices and regulatory standards used for the authorization and regulation of nuclear and radiological installations.

The document also provides security regulations for nuclear power plants, including regulatory positions and practices on important security issues in the areas of location, design, rendering into operation and exploitation. At the same time, it includes regulatory requirements and procedures for radio-protection in the field of use of radioactive sources in medicine and industry, operating experience of nuclear power plants and of radiological installations, including reports on security incidents.

According to the memorandum, the Parties shall also cooperate through an exchange of experts and by organizing some bilateral meetings.
