Net coal production totalled 2.229 million tonnes in H1 of 2015
Romania's net coal production totalled 2.229 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in H1, by 3.4pct (73,800 toe) higher from H1 2014, according to the data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
In the said period, Romania imported 248,500 toe of net coal, by 75,100 toe (43.3pct) more than the amount imported from January to June 2014.
Last year, net coal production went down by 5.7pct, 266,700 toe respectively, having stood at 4.445 million toe, whilst imports decreased by 15.6pct (92,700 toe), having totalled 500,500 toe.
According to the draft 2015 - 2035 Energy Strategy of Romania, the total lignite production capacity amounts to some 33 million tonnes per year, whilst the domestic lignite consumption is some 23 million tonnes per year, which means a production over-capacity of approximately 10 million tonnes per year.
In contrast, the national pit coal production does not meet the domestic market's demand and thus imports are necessary.
