Gas imports down 78.4pct, in H1 2015

Romania imported in the first six months of 2015 a volume of 66,700 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) usable natural gas, down by 78.4 per cent (242,300 toe) compared with the quantity imported in the similar period of 2014, according to the data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).The domestic natural gas production in the first half of 2015 totalled over 4.38 million toe, being by 32,300 toe (0.7 per cent) under that recorded in the period January-June 2014.

According to the INS, the usable natural gas imports in 2014 amounted to 447,400 toe, by 61.5 per cent (714,100 toe) down from the ones registered in 2013. Moreover, the domestic natural gas production totalled over 8.675 million toe, increasing by 73,900 toe (0.9 per cent) from the volume reported in the previous year.

Romania's Energy Strategy 2015 — 2035 draft reveals that Romania has the largest natural gas reserves in Central and Eastern Europe, with secure reserves of approximately 1,600 Twh.

"At an annual average production in Romania (11 billion cubic metres of natural gas) and in the conditions of a constant annual decline of 5 per cent of the secure natural gas reserves, corroborated with a replacement rate of the natural gas reserves of 80 per cent, the current natural gas reserves are estimated to be exhausted in an approximately 14-year period," according to the data.
