Eurostat: Romania, among EU states least dependent on energy imports
The European Union's energy dependency in 2014 stood at 53.4 percent, which means that the EU had to import more than half of the energy it consumed. The EU member states least dependent on energy imports were Estonia (8.9pct), Denmark (12.8 pct) and Romania (17pct), reveal data released on Thursday by the European statistics office (Eurostat).At the opposite end, the member states that recorded the highest share of energy imports in 2014 were: Malta (97.7pct), Luxembourg (96.6pct), Cyprus (93.4pct), Ireland (85.3pct), Belgium (80.1pct) and Lithuania (77.9pct).
Moreover, the Eurostat data show that the EU's energy dependency was higher in 2014 than in 1990, increasing from 44.2 percent to 53.4 percent. On the other hand, nine member states, among which Romania, recorded in 2014 the lowest share of energy imports after 1990. In Romania's case, energy imports actually halved, going down to 17 percent in 2014, from 34.3 percent in 1990.
By contrast, the Czech Republic is the only EU member state in 2014 to record the highest share of energy imports after 1990.
