Analysis: Romania is at the end of the EU ranking for solar and wind energy

Romania ranks in one of the last places among EU countries in terms of solar and wind energy per capita, according to an analysis by the Bankwatch Romania Association, according to which photovoltaic and wind capacities are installed faster and involve reduced operating costs, and it could be the resilient solution to crises like the one we have today.

Thus, Romania is fourth at the end of the ranking with 0.229 KW installed per capita, after our country being Slovenia (0.178), Slovakia (0.099) and Latvia (0.048) with a much more reduced potential in this domain.

The leader of the ranking is Denmark with 1.476 KW/inhabitant from solar and wind energy, followed by Germany (1.459), Sweden (1.353) and the Netherland (1.287).

Romania suffers from an acute deficit of the installed capacity. According to Association, 4 GW of fossil energy (units on gas and coal which became inefficient) were commissioned over the last seven years, without being replaced with other production sources. Since 2015 there were no significant capacities installed of renewable energy.

Increasing solar and wind power production capacity is all the more important in the context of rising electricity prices caused by Russia’s dependence on fossil fuels. Following the escalation of the political-military conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, electricity prices exploded, reaching an average price weighted per Market for the Next Day (PZU) in August of 2.423,86 lei/MWh, respectively 490 euros/MWh, after the average price in July was 1.813,74 lei/MWh, That is 367,19 euros/MWh.
