Additional Protocol between Romania and Canada concerning the peaceful uses of nuclear energy
State Secretary for Strategic Affairs with Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) Daniel Ionita and Canada's ambassador to Romania Joanne Lemay on Friday signed an additional protocol to an October 24, 1977 agreement between Romania and Canada concerning the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, signed in Ottawa.
"Romania is the only country in Europe to use Canadian technology in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The signing of the protocol is circumscribed to the shared interest in updating and deepening nuclear cooperation. At the same time, its special relevance is given by achieving compatibility between the bilateral legal framework in the area and the law of the European Union. The conclusion of the protocol was based on the European Commission agreement under the EURATOM Treaty," MAE reported on Friday in a press statement.
The importance of the protocol, says MAE, is also underscored by the need to continue sustainable development in the future of applications for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, given the weight of the nuclear power in Romania's national energy mix.
"The conclusion of the protocol will lead to objectives being achieved under the National Strategy on nuclear development in Romania and the Action Plan for its implementation. Updating the bilateral legal framework in the area of sustainable development of applications for the peaceful uses of nuclear power reflects a rising dynamic of late in the relations between Romania and Canada, as well as the wish of both countries to develop bilateral cooperation in areas of shared interest," says MAE.
