Wizz Air, Tarom and Ryanair are air companies with the fewest delays in Romania, according to the annual classification of the best companies and airports in the world, made by AirHelp and released on Tuesday. Otopeni Airport is the only Romanian airport ranking 116th in the top, out of 141 companies.

AirHelp, a company specialised in obtaining compensations for delayed, cancelled or overbooked flights, published the annual classification of the best air companies and airports at global level (AirHelp Score). The document shows that Wizz Air, Tarom and Ryanair are the best air companies and Otopeni Airport is the only one in the world top.

“AirHelp Score, the most complete and precise evaluation in the market, analysed 72 world air companies and 141 airports, according to three important criteria: punctuality (in time arrivals and departures), quality of company services aboard airplanes and in airports and processing compensation demands for delayed flights and passengers’ experience in airports”, AirHelp representatives say.

The study shows that over the analysed period, 17.22% of WizzAir flights had delays (0.58% of flights had delays of more than 3 hours), 29.33% of Tarom flights were delayed (0.92% more than 3 hours). Tarom routes with more problems were London-Bucharest, Alicante-Bucharest, Iasi-Madrid and Nice-Bucharest.

“Wizz Air recorded most points for all evaluation criteria. At global lebel, Wizz Air ranks 13th, before companies like Turkish Airlines (15th), Emirates (16th) or British Airways (21st),” AirHelp shows.

The classification also shows that Tarom recorded a score of 7.31, ranking 49th of 72 in the world top, before companies like Thomas Cook Airlines, Aeroflot Russian Airlines or Tap Portugal.

The top for Romania is completed by Ryanair, which is one of the lowest ranking air companies in Europe, next to Iberia and Easyjet.

“Following the evaluatin of the 72 world air companies, Qatar Airways ranks first, followed by Lufthansa and Etihad Airways. The delays top is completed by Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Austrian Airlines, Aegean Airlines, Qantas, Air Malta and Virgin Atlantic. Four of them (Austrian Airlines, Aegean Airlines, Air Malta and Virgin Atlantic) are European companies,” according to the study.

AirHelp shows that the last five places are occupied by Air Mauritius, Easyjet, Pakistan International Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines and WOW Air (Iceland).

“At the same time, AirHelp evaluated many airports on all continents, considering flight punctuality, service quality and passengers’ experience at terminals. The best airport with 8.77 points is Hamad International Airport of Doha, Qatar, followed by Athens International Airport (8.69) and Haneda Airport, Tokyo (8.63), while Henri Coanda Airport Bucharest is the only Romanian airport in the top, ranking 116th out of 141”, the study shows.

AirHelp representatives point out that the period of time analysed was December 22, 2017- March 20, 2018. The top for air companies took into account delays and cancellations of flights as well as passenger reviews.

“Flight punctuality meant 33.33% of overall score (the number of flights that reached destination in time out of total flights) as well as the quality of services offered, processing damage applications (for helpful an air company is, how quickly they process demands and compensate passengers)”, the AirHelp release shows.

In case of airports, flight punctuality and the quality of services offered meant 45% of total score, while passenger reviews in social media was only 10%.

AirHelp aids passengers obtain compensations up to 600 euro, in case the flight was cancelled or had delays of at least three hours because of the air company, including spontaneous crew strikes, the exact amount being calculated according to flight distance. Passengers can apply retroactively for compensations, up to three years after the affected flight.
