Trade: Electronic market on deadlock in first quarter

Because of the lack of major competitions like the Olympiad or important football championships, TV sales might drop this year, in an electronic market on deadlock in the first quarter, says Stefan Ichim, the head of Panasonic Romania, the company which brought out its latest product range this week. “The lack of major sports competitions and lower investments in electronics led to a deadlock in the market,” he says. “We hope the second half of the year will be a better one, especially in November and December.”

Panasonic launched several LED or plasma TV sets between 19 to 65 inches. Romanians prefer 32 inch TV sets but there is an increase of 40 inch sets. An intelligent 65 inch set costs 15,000 lei while a 32 inch TV is 1,600 lei. “We are witnessing a drop of product prices by 10-15%, even though TV sets become more and more performing. The latest sets allow Internet navigation, has applications, maps You Tube, they represent the future,” Ichim says. 3D has been implemented in all company sets. “Only two of the eight TV ranges we have are not 3D,” he added.

Another segment Panasonic counts one are cameras, with water resistant models with big zoom or the fifth mirror less generation. “Household appliances represent a segment we want to introduce especially in Romania. Ina Japan, Panasonic is a brand known for household appliances. We want to stand out with a special design and premium products,” he says.

The main local competitors for Panasonic are Sony, LG, Sharp for TV sets, Nikon, Canon and Sony for cameras.
