Trade: Dairy product sales drops by 25% in last two months
Dairy product sales in Romania dropped in September and October by 25% compared to the similar period of 2013, large quantities of EU dairy products coming into the market following the embargo imposed by Russia, said Dorin Cojocaru, the president of the Romanian Dairy Industry Association (APRIL). For that reason, he added, milk producers were left with large stocks of milk.
“There are many big farms with huge stocks. The 150 dairy product factories in Romania have stocks of goods for 6 months, in particular evaporated milk and various types of cheese,”Cojocaru said. He fears that the number of farms will drop next year because Romanian processors start losing the competition with EU farms which have lower prices. According to retail sources, sales dropped not only for Romanian dairy products but the whole dairy market went down this year. Dairy sales were 5-7% lower in the first 10 months of the year compared to the same period of 2013.
According to APRIL, the dairy market is estimated at over 880 million euros. The most important national producers are Danone, Albalact, Friesland, Olympus, Delaco and Hochland.
