Health: Medicine production in Romania may reach 1 billion euros
Romania has neither a strategy for the pharmaceutical industry nor a tradition in the field. The sector developed with transactions at Terapia and Sicomed, says Ioan Nani, the director of Antibiotice Iasi. According to him, the situation may change and the local production could have a potential of 1 billion euros.
He showed that at present, production in Romania is at the level of 600- 650 million euros and the actual production capacity of the first 4-5 Romanian manufacturers is at least 40% higher.
“I consider that the platforms in Romania could increase production to 1 billion euros, but we must take into account an important aspect: a Romanian product sells with an average price of 1.75 lei, compared to a product sold in the Romanian market with 3.5 lei per unit. Manufacture can reach 50% of consumption in Romania but we should see how it is divided in therapeutic classes,”Nani said.
The main medicine manufacturers in Romania include Terapia Ranbaxy, Zentiva (former Sicomed), Antibiotice Iasi, Labormed Alvogen and Biofarm. Europharm Brasov is an important factory in the local market, but it will be closed down next year, following a decision of the British group GSK, the owner of the unit.
