Tourism: Number of foreign tourists from EU countries grew by 8.4% in 2019
The number of foreign visitors registered at border cross points was over 12.815 millions in 2019, on the rise by 9.3% compared to 2018, of which 6.254 millions (48.8% of total) foreign visitors coming from EU countries (plus 8.4%), according to data centralized by the National Statistics Institution.
Foreign visitors came mostly from European countries (92.7%), the highest share representing visitors from Moldova. In fact, the first 6 places according to the number of arrivals belong to European countries: Moldova (19.7%), Bulgaria (14.5%), Hungary (13.7%), Serbia (4.5%) and Germany (4.1%).
Compared to 2018, there were the highest increases of the number of arrivals from Africa (11.6%), Europe (9.7%), America (7.9%) and Australia, Oceania and other territories (5%).
Road transport was used by foreign visitors to travel in Romania. Compared to the previous year, in 2019 there were important increases for railway transport (by 16.2%) and the naval one (by 14%).
