Tourism : Buzaului Land and Alba Iulia, new EDEN European destinations of excellence
Buzaului Land (south) and Alba Iulia (center-west) have been designated as European excellence destinations within the EDEN project, launched six years ago by the European Commission / EC /, the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism / MDRT / announced in a press release on Friday.
According to the quoted source, at this year's edition of the project and following the national EDEN competition, Buzaului Land was designated as the Romanian destination for rural tourism, while Alba Iulia entered the category of tourism and physical regeneration sites.
The two destinations will be awarded and promoted at Romania's stand, arranged by MDRT at Romania's Tourism Fair, organized at Romexpo, from November 15 to 18, 2012. As well, they will be included in the EDEN network established at European level.
EDEN Project 'European Destinations of Excellence' was launched in 2006 by the Directorate General for Enterprises and Industry of the EC and is aimed at the major objectives of European policy in the tourism industry: sustainability, decongestionate classical destinations, combat of seasonal use only, redirecting flows of tourists to the non-traditional destinations, creating networks between the participants in the tourism sector.
EDEN destinations are designated based on a national competition, organized by the tourism authority of each country participating in the project, according to a theme and selection criteria agreed by the European Forum.
For the time being, Romania holds in its travel industry portfolio other three EDEN destinations: Horezu Depression (south) (in 2008, the theme of tourism and immaterial local heritage), Apuseni Natural Park (west) (in 2009, the theme of tourism and protected areas ) and Geoagiu Baths Spa (west) (2010, the aquatic tourism theme).
