Telecom.IT: Frequency for 4G services at operators’ disposal since May

The 800 MHz frequency band will be available to Romanian telecommunications operators for 4G services as of May 2013, minister Dan Nica declared on Monday at an event organized by Cosmote Romania for testing 4G services at Cosmote Romania. “Together with the Defense Ministry we have succeeded in freeing the frequency sector earlier than we should have. So in May the 800 MHz corridor will be at the operators’ disposal while as of July most of the 1,800 and 2,600MHz corridors will be available. The winners will be users in Romania and Romania’s economy,” Nica said.

Present at the event, the president of ANCOM, Catalin Marinescu, mentioned that promoting the innovation and stimulating investments in Romanian networks are the main priorities of the Authority.

ANCOM is doing this in two ways: firstly by promoting competition, as this is the engine leading to investments and innovation and secondly by laying resources which can develop networks at the operators’ disposal. By organizing the spectrum tender we laid at the operator’s disposal double the spectrum we have had until now and we have become knowhow suppliers to other European countries,” Marinescu added.

As of April, Cosmote Romania will supply 4G telecommunications services in Bucharest and other towns. LTE (4G) technology has a higher spectrum efficiency, 3-4 higher than UMTS/HSUPA, a superior increase of download debit up to 200 Mbps and higher capacities at lower prices.
