Telecom. IT: Internet traffic over landline networks in Romania surges 51% in 2020, up 30% over mobile networks

Internet traffic over landline networks in Romania surged by over 51% in 2020 from the year before, internet traffic over mobile networks jumped by 30%, according to preliminary data released on Thursday at the 25th edition of the Communications Day event, by Eduard Lovin, deputy chairman of the National Communications Administration and Regulation Authority (ANCOM).

"Preliminary figures for the end of 2020 show that internet traffic over landline networks in Romania saw a massive increase of over 51% compared y-o-y, to more than 10,000 Petabytes (PB). Whereas landline broadband internet connections in 2020 doubled from 2019 , traffic over them almost quadrupled," Lovin said.

According to Lovin, internet traffic over mobile networks increased by 30%, y-o-y, yet 90% of the entire data traffic in Romania is over landline networks.

"Internet traffic over mobile networks increased by 30% to 1,100 Petabytes. It was a faster growth rate than the previous year, at 44%, but the mobility of people was severely restricted, as you well know lst year. That also influenced the consumption of mobile internet, in other words, although most of us used more internet in 2020 we used Wi-Fi connections where they were available. We can see that 90% of the internet traffic in Romania is generated over landline networks," Lovin mentioned.

The official also said the average per capita monthly traffic over the landline networks in Romania was 44 GB in late 2020, and 80% of the broadband internet landline connections allowed download speeds of over 100 Mbps.

The results of an ANCOM study conducted in late 2020 highlight the fact that 90% of the urban respondents were using landline or mobile networks for internet surfing, as against 80% of the rural respondents.
