Agriculture: Romania, the sixth in the EU for wheat production obtained last year

Romania occupied the sixth place in the EU as regards wheat production obtained last year, with a total of 6.41 million tons, the production of 2020 being smaller by 3.88 million tons (37.7%) against 2019 due to the extreme drought, according to the temporary data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

Thus, in the EU top regarding the wheat production, France reported last year the biggest production, of 30.073 million tons, followed by Germany – 22.171 million tons, Poland – 11.728 million tons, Spain – 8.267 million tons, Italy – 6.716 million tons and Romania – 6.410 million tons.

From the point of view of the cultivated surface, Romania was fourth in the EU with 2.146 million ha, after France (4.513 million ha), Germany (2.833 million ha) and Poland (2.472 million ha).

According to the data sent by the ministry of agriculture, Romania exported last year in the inter and outer community a quantity of 4.336 million tons of wheat, over two thirds of the quantity obtained,getting 844.3 million euro.

The internal consumption of wheat is approximately 3 million tons, out of which approximately 2.2 million tons are used in bakery, around 500,000 tons for seed and almost 400,000 tons for feed and alcohol industry.
