Telecom. IT: ANCOM: The 2G / 3G / 4G signal amplifiers can be operated only with the agreement of the operators
The 2G/3G/4G signal amplifiers should have CE mark and can be activated only with the agreement of mobile phone and mobile Internet operators, says the National Authority for Administration and Regulations in Communications (ANCOM).
“Because the use of such equipment, without operator agreement grows every year, we inform users that they risk sanctions according to the law in force,” says Cristina Popa, ANCOM CEO for control and monitoring.
Signal amplifiers (repeaters) are installations meant to take over the signal issued by mobile phone service suppliers outside buildings to amplify it inside them, offering an enhanced radio signal.
“In case a signal amplifier is not marked CE it is not according to standards. When such an equipment is put in operation in Romania it can produce interference preventing the functioning of mobile phone services. The number of mobile phone or Internet users in the area drops significantly, calling becomes almost impossible or calls break up. In extreme cases, interference caused by equipment not according to standards may affect calls to emergency number 112,” the press release mentions.
While in 2016 there were 7 such signal amplifiers located and confiscated, in 2017 there were 68, in 2018 – 132 and in 2019 there were 44 amplifiers without CE mark that caused interference.
In case those who own equipment that are not according to standards
continue to use them, they infringe provisions of government decision 740/2016 and risk sanctions between 500 and 5,000 lei.
ANCOM is the institution protecting the interests of communications users in Romania, by promoting competition in the communications market, manages limited resources and encourages efficient investments in infrastructure and innovation.
