Telecom .IT: China Electronics to sell 50,000 phones in Romania in 2014
China Electronics Corporation (CEC), one of the largests Chinese manufacturers of telecom equipment, which bought Philips' mobile phone division in 2007, will exceed the threshold of 50,000 smartphones sold in Romania by the end of 2014 and aims to double its market share in 2015, according to local paper Ziarul Financiar citing Radu Ionescu, a distribution representative for Philips mobile phones in Romania.
The company plans to reach a market share of 1 percent or over 50,000 sold units in 2015.
CEC entered the Romanian market in 2014 and has a gradual strategy of entering the market. The first launched models were entry-level and mid-level smartphones. The company introduced the high-end models Philips I928 and Philips Xenium I908 on 11 November. These are available in exclusivity in the Digi Mobil offer of Romanian operator RCS&RDS. Philips I928 costs RON 1,349, and Philips Xenium I908 can be acquired at RON 1,199. The majority of Philips smartphones, namely 85-90 percent, are sold through telecom operators.
Philips mobile phones are also available in Arsis stores, which are partners with Vodafone. These were also available in Cosmote Romania stores before Cosmote and Romtelecom were rebranded under the Telekom Romania brand.
So far, the best selling Philips mobile phones were the S308 and W3500 entry-level models, but also the S388 mid-level model. CEC will launch in Romania the next generation of its high-end products, namely Philips i966.
