Second 'cash-for-clunker' program session starts with 15,000 available vouchers
The second session of this year's ‘cash-for-clunker' program for individuals kicks off on Wednesday, August 8, with a budget of RON 57 ml (about 12.5 million euros) earmarked by the Environment Fund's Administration; under the program, 15,000 cars older than 10 years can be taken off the roads, announced representatives of the Ministry of Environment.
Ministry representatives said the session for legal persons is in the file-submission stage, which runs between April 23 - August 31.
Just like in 2010 and 2011, the scrappage bonus is RON 3,800, the equivalent of a voucher at face value. A maximum of three vouchers can be used for purchasing a new vehicle.
A number of 25,964 cars older than 10 years have been scrapped under the program this year, and 8,006 new cars, of which 3,661 of domestic make, have been acquired.
Minister of Environment Rovana Plumb announced on June 18 that the number of vouchers made available would be supplemented by 15,000 worth a total of RON 57 million by the end of June.
The Minister also said that the ‘cash-for-clunker' program would continue, as it provides support to the citizens, and that another 15,000 vouchers can be released on the market after the budget revision.
Asked what the financing source for these vouchers will be, Rovana Plumb said an analysis had determined that the money can be taken from other sources of the Environment Fund Administration. The Minister added that funding for parks in villages and communities would be suspended for a certain period.
Rovana Plumb also said that electric and hybrid cars would be kept as a separate entry in the ‘cash-for-clunker' program.
No less than 305,964 used cars have been dumped in the past two years and 101,766 new cars (40,269 of which made in Romania) have been bought under the program, shows data of the Ministry of Environment.
