Romanians forget about holidays abroad
Only a third of Romanians who could afford going on holiday this summer prefer going abroad, compared to a half in 2010 and 42% last year, according to a IRES study, which analysed the Romanians’ behaviour about spending their vacations. The study shows that one out of five Romanians chooses to go on vacation only in summer. About 45% of Romanians say they will go to the seaside and 27% choose the mountains. Only 11% want to visit a city and 4% want to go to balneal resorts.
Preferences for holidays abroad dropped from 48% in 2010, to 42% in 2011 and 32% this year. When people get older their wish for holidays abroad drops. However, 24% of Romanians have never been to the Black sea littoral.
The budgets Romanians have allocated for summer holidays this year are lower than last year. About 40% of people questioned by IRES declare they will allocate 1000 lei for summer holidays, compared to 29% last year, while 26% say this year they will spend between 1000 and 2000 lei compared to 28% a year ago. 7% of Romanians will spend between 3000 and 4000 lei compared to 4% last year while there are fewer people ready to spend 6000 lei for vacations (5% in 2012 compared to 7% in 2011).
Over 12% of townspeople will allocate between 3000 and 4000 lei for summer holidays, while only 2.4% of people from the rural area will spend a similar amount of money.
Most people who had vacations in the last 10 years spent them in Romania (71% in 2011, 69% in 2012) while 15% and 11% went abroad. One out of 8 Romanians (12%) were on holidays both in Romania and abroad.
Last year 34% of respondents were on holiday in Romania, while 11% went only abroad and 2% both abroad and in Romania.
The study was made on a sample of 1540 persons 18 and older and is representative at national level. The margin of error is +/-2.5%. The study was made at the beginning of July.
