Only 8% of Romania's population uses e-commerce; European target is 47%

Only 8% of Romania's population currently uses e-commerce, whilst the European relevant target is 47%, said, on Thursday, State Secretary in the Ministry for Information Society (MSI) Diana Voicu, at the 'European Digital Youth Summit' (EDYS).

'We need to achieve more action plans in order to increase the volume of e-commerce in Romania, from the current level of 8% to the European target of 47%.

E-commerce is very important for the development of a country, as it facilitates the buying of some cheaper and more diverse products, with the costs of traditional transport decreasing significantly, through the use of drones.

As for the single digital market, this is promoted by enhancing online security, through funding the development of online platforms for trading goods and services, both nationally as well as internationally,' said Diana Voicu.

According to it, the National Strategy Digital Agenda for Romania is influenced by the European one, with emphasis on interoperability and ensuring the necessary legislative framework.

'Currently, only 5% of Romania's population uses the e-government services, our target being to come closer to the 35% threshold. From the procedures to start up a business, up to obtaining a birth certificate or a marriage license, all these operations must be done much easier, in the online environment. To ensure data confidentiality, we need to implement a cybersecurity system. According to a study conducted by Eurostat, 35% of internet users surveyed in Europe, admitted that they have a high level of concern regarding the abuse of personal information sent over the Internet and/or violation of privacy,' said Diana Voicu.

'European Digital Youth Summit'(EDYS) is the year's largest digital event for youths, bringing together over 100 participants from 14 European countries. The event is taking place under the SMARTER project, organized by the Association 'Group of the European Youth for Change' (GEYC), with financial support from the European Commission, through the 'Youth in Action' Programme.
