Infrastructure : Government wants Malay technology in Romania for highways
Malay companies are expected to invest in Romania in infrastructure and construction projects like highways and railroads, said Carmen Burlacu, secretary of state for global business in the Foreign Ministry during a recent visit to Kuala Lumpur.
“Malaysia handles these domains very well. We would like to see Malay technology implemented in Romania too, especially in infrastructure and energy sector,” said Burlacu according to the national news agency in Malaysia.
Romania has now 646 km of highways, of which 113 km built before 1989.
Companies from Malaysia can also make investments in other economic sectors in Romania, such as agriculture, food industry, tourism, manufacture of electric and electronic products, oil and gas, said Burlacu at a press conference.“Although the big investors in Romania are Germany, Holland, Italy, USA, South Korea and Japan, we concentrate on South-Eastern Asia and especially on Malaysia”, said the secretary of state.
Romania wants to offer Malaysia expertise in the energy sector, including nuclear , thermal, hydro, wind and solar technology.
Commercial exchanges between the two countries recorded 96 million dollars in the first 6 months, and they are estimated to grow by 10% until the end of the year compared to 2013 when they exceeded 200 million dollars.
Romania’s ambassador to Malaysia, Constantin Nistor, added that Romanian authorities analyse cultural exchanges between the two countries, through education and tourism. At present about 200 Malay people are studying in Romania. “We estimate that about 10,000 Romanian tourists will travel to Malaysia this year compared to 6,000 Malay people in Romania”.
Romania exports equipment, oil and gas technology, raw materials, furniture, textiles and footwear IT products and medicines to Malaysia, while imports are represented by electronic products, palm tree oil and bio diesel oil.
242 km of highway were inaugurated lately in Romania, 116 km were completed last year and works were contracted for 247 km.The Ministry of Transports said that Romania will have a network of 2,440 km of highway in 2020 and presented the financial resources to be used for that purpose and the calendar of projects in 2014-2015.
CNADNR will launch this year contract procedures for feasibility studies needed to build 1800 km of highway and will select contractors for 375 km. Works for 651 km of highway will be carried out this year while 1,429 km will be built in 2015, 1,186 km of which represent new projects.
