Mobile telephony users down 3 pct by mid-year
Romanian mobile telephony users numbered 22.7 million by this mid-year, down 3 percent from the prior year, while voice traffic was in excess of 30 billion minutes, said Eduard Lovin, Regulatory director at the National Communications Regulatory Authority at a specialised seminar on Wednesday.
'The Romanian telecoms market is one of the most competitive in Europe at this moment. The number of the active mobile telephony users dropped at mid-2012, but it is rather the number of active SIMs that dropped. On the other hand, there is a rise in the use rate of the Internet services and traffic. At mid-2012, on June 30, the overall number of mobile telephony users dwindled by 3 percent to 22.7 million. The number of pre-paid cards dropped 4.6 percent for active cards and 0.7 percent for subscriptions. Voice traffic surged 6.2 percent on a quarterly basis, exceeding 30 billion minutes', Lovin announced.
He added the Authority next year plans to cut the inter-connecting tariffs and increase the voice traffic amid a flat number of subscribers.
'Furthermore, we plan to record an increase in the number of mobile Internet users and to also introduce 4G services at as competitive prices as possible, on a larger scale', the Authority official stressed.
