Infrastructure :Rehabilitation of Bucharest Historic Centre streets costs some 9.5-10 mln euros
The works for the rehabilitation and restoration of the entire structure of the old road system and the entire utilities system in the 16 streets lying in Zone A of the Bucharest Historic Centre have cost some 9.5-10 million euros, not 23 million euros as the General Council had approved six years ago, City Mayor Sorin Oprescu said on presenting the results of his four years' tenure on Thursday.
'The works were being unjustifiably stalled, spending had already been made and next to nothing could be seen to have been done. After long evaluations and negotiations, I was forced to terminate the contract and resume the works with other firms. All the works there - water supply, sewerage, lighting - did not cost the 23 million euros the Bucharest General Council had approved six years ago. They have all cost 9.5 million - 10 million euros', Oprescu stressed.
He explained 'here it is found the largest part of the old, historic area of the Capital, with streets of genuine historic value and cultural importance, with names that are important on a national level (Lipscani, Gabroveni, Smardan)''.
''Unfortunately, this area was neglected for a long time, and it was in a state of serious physical deterioration, by repeated concerted aggression on the essence of the Historic Centre', the mayor added.
'We are concerned with preserving the historic value of the Historic Centre, which is given by the inherited sites, by the churches, by the foundations of the buildings dating back more than 600 years, with its most important and impressive pieces being Stavropoleos Church and the Rulers Palace and Court', he said.
