Infrastructure : EC allocates 83 million euros to expansion of underground line 4, Parc Bazilescu - Straulesti

The European Commission approved on Thursday a financial contribution of 83 million euros from the Cohesion Fund for the major project “Expansion of Underground line 4, Parc Bazilescu - Straulesti”, which is part of the Operational Programme for Transport.

The project will expand the present line 4 of Bucharest Underground by a new segment of 1.89 km and the construction of two new underground stations along this new segment, which will reduce by 65% the time to travel by public transport and will be used by about 3,638,700 passengers per year. The total value of the project is 97.7 million euros.

“About 50 thousand people living in Bucurestii Noi and Chitila will benefit from the new infrastructure built. People from the north-western part of Bucharest and from Mogosoaia, Buftea and Chitila will also benefit by easier access to the transport network,” said the European commissioner for regional policies, Corina Cretu.

The newly built underground line will be administered by Metrorex and will be under direct public administration management.

The Cohesion Fund is for member states whose gross national income per capita is lower than 90% of EU average. It is meant to reduce economic and social differences and promote durable development.
