“Wheat resources and produce in 2013/2014 were 35.4% higher than those of 2009/2010, when the maximum level of 6.05 million tonnes was reached. The level of wheat and wheat product imports grew by 60.4% in 2013/2014 compared to 2011/2012 when the lowest level was reached (561,300 tonnes). The share of imports among 2013/2014 resources was of 11%, 2.6% less than the previous year, while wheat and wheat product exports recorded the maximum level in 2013/2014 when 5.1 million tonnes were registered,” the study shows.

The domestic wheat consumption amounted to 4.588 million tonnes in 2013/2014 on the rise by 11% against the previous year. Of that human consumption represented 3.494 million tonnes, 11% more than in 2012/2013, but dropping compared to 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 when human consumption was 3.593 million tonnes and 3.556 million tonnes.

“Domestic wheat and wheat product consumption registered a level 5.4% lower than the maximum level (2008/2009) but 11.7% higher against the previous year, while human consumption represented 76.2% of overall domestic consumption, while wheat self-consumption (domestic use from producer yield) represented 44.2% of total domestic consumption,” the report shows.

According to methodological norms, supply balance sheets for the main farm produce is an important instrument for foodstuff market study, a synthesis of statistic indicators. They are made according to methodologies in harmony with EU demands and are sent to Eurostat based on formal accords.

The reference period represents the year of selling campaign, between July 1 of the previous year - June 30 of the current year, which coincides with the yield period of most produce.
